A low-dose trial of Viagra (sildenafil) in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in Mexico, dubbed the “Mexican Viagra Trial,” has confirmed the drug has a similar safety profile. But the study’s authors caution that such a drug would potentially lead to serious side effects, especially as it requires a long-term follow-up.
The trial’s results are based on the results of an earlier study of sildenafil citrate, a drug used for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension in men, and on the results of the first three-year follow-up studies of Viagra in men.
“This is the first study to show a strong safety advantage of using sildenafil for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men,” said senior author Dr. David M. Schondelmeyer, a clinical professor at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern Feinberg Medical Center, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and an associate professor of urology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. “It is important to note that the results from the earlier studies may not be as conclusive as we previously thought, but they still may provide some useful information for men who might be taking sildenafil for pulmonary hypertension.”
The study’s authors were not involved in the work. However, they do not accept responsibility for the results and have not taken the drug.
The study was published in the August/September issue of theJournal of Sexual Medicine.
In the past, sildenafil was used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension in men. However, the drug was first developed by Pfizer and became popular for treating erectile dysfunction in men in the late 1990s. The drug was approved by the FDA in 1999 and has been used off and on for several years.
However, in the past, it was not approved to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension in men. In fact, Pfizer marketed sildenafil for pulmonary arterial hypertension and was not approved to treat erectile dysfunction in men in the early 2000s.
“The safety of sildenafil has not been established in Mexico, so it is important that we do this study with caution,” Schondelmeyer said.
“If we were to try sildenafil for erectile dysfunction, we would expect to see a slight increase in side effects, which are similar to those seen with other medications,” he added.
The researchers also noted that the study did not draw a comparison between Viagra and sildenafil, a drug used for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension.
“If it is a drug that is taken by men, the benefit of it in this population is less than the benefit in the general population,” Schondelmeyer said. “If we were to try sildenafil for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, we would expect to see a slight increase in side effects.”
Viagra is available only by prescription. If the drug is not prescribed by a doctor, it is usually taken by mouth.
Researchers are still studying the safety of sildenafil for pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The study’s authors also note that other erectile dysfunction medications like Viagra have also been studied for safety.
“In a few clinical studies involving men with erectile dysfunction, the safety of sildenafil was studied,” Schondelmeyer said. “In these studies, patients were given sildenafil at doses of 100 to 200 milligrams twice a day for four to six weeks.”
Viagra is currently in a clinical trial in more than 100,000 men. The results of the trial are expected in the second half of this year. The drug is not yet approved for use in the United States.
The study was funded by Pfizer, the maker of Viagra. Pfizer, the manufacturer of sildenafil, had no role in the study, and no financial relationships were disclosed.
